Heart failure with a raised JVP may be caused by certain conditions which will be exacerbated by diuretic therapy:

  • constrictive pericarditis
  • pericardial tamponade
  • right ventricular infarction
  • pulmonary embolism
  • mitral valve disease when the cardiac output is low
