Heart-lung transplantation was first undertaken in 1981, it is indicated for patients suffering from pulmonary hypertension, including:

  • primary pulmonary hypertension
  • secondary pulmonary hypertension resulting from e.g.:
    • recurrent pulmonary emboli
    • emphysema
    • cystic fibrosis

The survival rates are:

  • 80% 1 year survival
  • 65% 5 year survival
