Hypereosinophilia syndrome is a rare condition where there is an idiopathic eosinophil count of > 15 x 10^9/dl. It is associated with Loeffler's endocarditis leading to thrombosis and restrictive cardiomyopathy.
Generally affects young men (M:F = 9:1) between 20 and 50 years (mean 33 years). This condition may present with a systemic disease similar to that seen in polyarteritis nodosa. Active disease is associated with thrombocytopaenia.
Treatment - steroids or cytotoxic drugs may be helpful.
