Inadequate absorption of food
Inadequate absorption of food causing failure to thrive may itself be caused by:
Intrinsic reasons:
- coeliac disease
- lactose intolerance
- pancreatic insufficiency, as caused by cystic fibrosis
- inflammatory bowel disease
Extrinsic reasons:
- parasitic infestation, for example giardiasis
- tropical sprue
