The side-effects of nitroprusside infusion are caused by:

  • excessively rapid reduction in blood pressure:
    • headache
    • dizzines
    • nausea and vomiting
    • abdominal pain
    • palpitation

  • cyanide toxicity:
    • the cyanide metabolite may accumulate at high rates of nitroprusside infusion
    • tachycardia
    • sweating
    • hyperventilation
    • arrhythmias
    • metabolic acidosis
