Erysipeloid is a benign condition due to infection by Erysipelothrix insidiosa. It is common in fishermen and meat handlers, and is characterized by a purplish erythema of the skin, most often over the fingers or the back of the hand. Systemic infection is rare. Endocarditis may occur.
Erysipeloid must be distinguished from cellulitis and erysieplas.
Treatment is with penicillin or broad spectrum antibiotics if the patient appears toxic or the diagnosis is unclear.
