Nodular fasciitis

Authoring team

Nodular fasciitis is an uncommon, benign conditions resulting from a rapid overgrowth of poorly-differentiated fibroblast within the hypodermis. In its early, more invasive form, the lesion may invade into overlying skin and deeper muscle.

Clinically, the typically young patient presents with a non-tender, well-circumscribed and tethered lump peripherally within the skin. Naturally, it raises concern of neoplasia, but the growth is eventually self-limiting.

Treatment is excision biopsy. Occasionally, the early form is difficult to distinguish from a sarcomatous lesion. Recurrence is rare.
