Practical points
To maximise the usefulness of the information obtained:
- get the patient to attend with a full bladder
- arrange for the study to be conducted in relatively normal surroundings - ideally, a normal lavatory with the recording equipment out of site
- a minimum of 200 ml of urine should passed - at low volumes, the flow rate is reduced making interpretation misleading
- interpret the results against a normogram derived from a large number of normal flow rates
