Pathology
The following histological features are found irrespective of the cause of the chronic active hepatitis:
- intense portal inflammatory infiltrate which spills over into the liver parenchyma
- piecemeal hepatocyte necrosis
- bridging necrosis between adjacent triads
- progressive fibrosis beginning in the portal triads and radiating into the liver parenchyma
- the end-point is frank cirrhosis
