Aetiology
Parathyroid gland deficiency:
- primary deficiency:
- idiopathic / congenital pseudohypoparathyroidism
- DiGeorge syndrome
- secondary deficiency:
- destruction during thyroid, parathyroid or laryngeal surgery; by far the most common cause
- infiltration by iron in haemochromatosis or by metastases
Reduced secretory activity:
- hypomagnesaemia - Mg necessary for PTH secretion
- vitamin D excess
End organ resistance:
- pseudohypoparathyroidism
- hypomagnesaemia
