212 premature neonates, born at 25 weeks to 29 weeks and 6 days gestation, and who were intubated for respiratory distress syndrome due to surfactant deficiency were entered into the trial.
105 were randomised to porcactant alfa and 107 to pumactant. Clinicians were not blind to assignment.
Data was analysed by intention to treat.
