Alanine aminotransferase
Alanine aminotransferase is a cytoplasmic enzyme that is predominantly hepatic in origin. Therefore, changes tend to parallel those of aspartate aminotransferase, but ALT is more liver-specific.
Mild hepatic injury tends to increase the ratio of cytoplasmic ALT to AST; more severe disease reverses the trend.
