Shaft (first rib)
The shaft of the first rib is considered separately because of its many attachments and relations to the structures in the root of the neck:
- it is flat in a horizontal plane
- it can be divided into superior and inferior surfaces
- it extends from the tubercle posteriorly to the anterior joint with costal cartilage
