Aetiology
In about 30% of cases there is no clear abnormality found on endoscopy. In the remaining cases of heartburn with positive findings there are:
- oesophagitis with no other pathology 24%
- duodenal ulcer 17%
- hiatus hernia 15%
- gastritis 9%
- duodenitis 6%
- gastric ulcer 5%
- reflux of bile 0.7%
- gastric cancer 0.2%
In 23% of cases there were two or more different pathologies present.
