Neonatal mastitis (infective)
Neonatal mastitis is an uncommon condition
- occurs in full term infants in the first few weeks of life
- girls are affected twice as often as boys
- initial management consists of intravenous antibiotics, while in cases of abscess formation, incision and drainage is indicated
Notes:
- breast abscess complicating neonatal mastitis may affect future development of the breast involved
- therefore optimisation of clinical management aiming to reduce the possibility of abscess formation seems reasonable
- for patients treated with incision and drainage in infancy, planned, long-term follow up is recommended
