Principles of management
The management of peritonitis is dependent on location and aetiology:
- localised peritonitis: management dependent on cause, e.g. acute appendicitis necessitates urgent appendicetomy, acute diverticulitis or acute salpingitis are usually managed with antibiotics
- generalised peritonitis: management consists of preoperative, operative and postoperative steps
