The complications of rectal prolapse are:

  • irreducibility
  • ulceration
  • bleeding
  • strangulation
  • perforation of bowel

The most common postoperative complications are bleeding and dehiscence at the anastomosis (2) and the postoperative recurrence rate can be as high as 20%, regardless of operative procedure. (2)
