Diagnosis
The diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis involves consideration of the following investigations:
- intravenous urography shows bilateral hydronephrosis with drawing together of the ureters in the midline
- the ESR and CRP are raised; also anaemia and uraemia
- CT/MRI - reveals a peri-aortic mass
- biopsy of retroperitoneal tissue at time of operation allows confirmation of diagnosis and exclusion of other pathologies such as malignancy
