Inflammatory functions
The coagulation cascade has several functions during inflammation:
- cessation of haemorrhage which may be secondary to initial physical trauma, microbial or chemical mediator attack
- factor XII can activate the kinin and fibrinolytic cascades
- thrombin can activate the complement cascade
- fibrin peptides, produced from the cleavage of fibrinogen, are chemotactic for leukocytes and increase vascular permeability
- extravascular fibrin formation may limit the spread of an infective agent
