Treatment
Traditional therapy for ethylene glycol poisoning mirrors that for methanol poisoning:
- ethanol:
- 50 g orally or i.v., then
- 10 g/hr by infusion
- haemodialysis if the concentration of ethylene glycol exceeds 25 mg/ml
Intravenous 4-methyl pyrazole may be used instead of ethanol:
- 9.5 mg/kg stat
- 7.0 mg/kg at 12 hr
- 3.6 mg/kg at 24 hr
- 1.2 mg/kg at 36 hr
- 0.6 mg/kg at 48 hr
