Submucosa
The submucosa of the oesophagus largely consists of areolar connective tissue interspersed with:
- blood vessels
- lymphatics
- nerve fibres
- mucus glands projecting onto the oesophageal surface by a fine duct; tend to be concentrated at the superior and inferior ends of the oesophagus
