The Royal College of Surgeons in 1992 stated that about 50% of all elective procedures were best done on a day case basis:
- general surgery:
- hernia repair, e.g. inguinal, femoral, epigastric
- varicose vein surgery
- breast lump excision
- anal stretch
- pilonidal sinus
- orthopaedic surgery:
- carpal tunnel release
- release of trigger finger
- Dupuytren's contracture surgery
- arthroscopy
- amputation of finger or toe
- ingrowing toe nails
- urological surgery:
- circumcision
- cystoscopy with or without biopsy
- hydrocoele surgery
- excision of epididymal cyst
- reversal of vasectomy
- paediatric surgery:
- circumcision
- inguinal herniotomy
- hydrocoele surgery
- gynaecological surgery:
- D & C
- termination of pregnancy
- laparoscopy
- ENT surgery:
- myringotomy & insertion of grommets
- direct larygoscopy & pharyngoscopy
- submucous resection
- plastic surgery: blepharoplasty, breast augmentation, insertion of tissue expanders
