Differential diagnosis
PID must be distinguished from: (1)
- appendicitis
- urinary tract infection
- endometriosis
- rupture, torsion or haemorrhage into an ovarian cyst
- ectopic pregnancy
- spontaneous abortion
- pelvic adhesions
- irritable bowel syndrome and on rare occasions other gastrointestinal disorders
- functional pain - pain of unknown physical origin
