Treatment
Treatment of aplastic anaemia has three objectives:
- identify and eliminate underlying aetiology if possible
- supportive care - transfusion of red cells and platelets, and antibiotics
- specific therapy to restore normal haematopoiesis:
- drug therapy
- androgens, e.g. oxymetholone } useful in mild or
- lithium } moderate aplasia
- bone marrow transplantation
- drug therapy
- anti-thymocyte and anti-lymphocyte globulins
- others
