Clinical appearance of dermatophyte nail infection

Dermatophyte infection may present with different appearances. The whole nail may be affected with white or yellow discolouration with the nail becoming thickened and brittle. Otherwise patterns of localised nail involvement may occur. There may be distal and lateral nail involvement spreading proximally or proximal subungal dystrophy or just superficial white onychomycosis. There may be involvement of surrounding skin.
