Control of erythropoiesis
The key elements controlling erythropoiesis are:
- erythropoietin:
- stimulated by hypoxia due to anaemia or respiratory compromise
- increases RNA and DNA turnover in haemopoietic stem cells
- stimulates:
- progenitor proliferation
- iron uptake into progenitor
- haemoglobin synthesis in progenitor
- maturation time is reduced
other hormones:
þþ oestrogens inhibit
- androgens stimulate
- a ready supply of specific precursors and co-factors:
- amino acids
- iron
- vitamin B12
- folic acid
- vitamin C
