Howell-Jolly bodies
These are red cells seen on the peripheral blood film in which the nuclear remnant is still seen (red blood cells normally have no nucleus).
Causes include:
- following surgical splenectomy
- in cases of splenic atrophy e.g. coeliac disease and sickle cell anaemia
