Idiopathic myelofibrosis (IM) is an uncommon disease.

In the western world the incidence is estimated to be 0·4 - 0·7 new cases per 100 000 persons/year (1).

The disease mainly affects the elderly people.

  • median age at presentation is about 65 years
  • but 22% of patients are aged 55 years old or less (1)
