Indications for Swan-Ganz catheterisation
The indications for Swan-Ganz catheterisation include:
- cardiac failure or pulmonary oedema:
- to monitor response to therapy
- to monitor response to therapy
- in a patient with a "white-out" chest radiograph:
- to differentiate between adult respiratory distress syndrome and cardiogenic pulmonary oedema
- to differentiate between adult respiratory distress syndrome and cardiogenic pulmonary oedema
- cardiogenic shock:
- in a patient who has hypotension in the absence of hypovolaemia
- the CVP is 10 cm H2O or more
- in patients with a suspected ventricular septal defect, e.g. post-myocardial infarction
