Treatment
Seek expert advice.
Acute disease - treatment with nifurtimox or benzidiazole:
- benznidazole
- is considered first-line therapy because it usually causes fewer side effects and has more evidence of effectiveness than nifurtimox (1)
- people with Chagas disease should be treated with benznidazole for 60 days and monitored regularly for side effects (1)
Chronic disease is treated symptomatically. There is no evidence that drug treatment alters the natural course of the disease.
