This section deals briefly with the basic components of the immune system.

Parts of this immune system may fail and predispose an individual to infection. Causes include:

  • malnutrition
  • infection, especially with lymphotrophic viruses
  • major surgery
  • renal failure
  • leukaemia
  • lymphoma

In children, a failure of the immune system may also lead to an increased tendency to develop allergy and cancer.
