- UK mortality rate for patients admitted with sepsis is 30% - approximately 5 times higher than for ST elevation myocardial infarction and stroke - and is responsible for approximately 44,000 deaths and 150,000 hospital admissions in the United Kingdom (UK) per year
- majority of these patients will arrive via the ED
- hospitalizations for sepsis have more than doubled over the last 10 years
- sepsis is a time-critical condition.
- in the most severe cases, septic shock, for every hour that appropriate antibiotic administration is delayed, there is an 8% increase in mortality
