General advice in non - gonococcal urethrits (NGU)

Authoring team

The following advice should be given to patients together with clear written information:

  • an explanation of the causes of NGU, including non-infective causes, and possible short-term and long-term implications for the health of the patient and his partner(s).
  • importance of complying with treatment and the side effects
  • refraining from sexual intercourse which includes all genital-mucous membrane contact for at least 7 days after treatment and until symptoms have resolved and all partners successfully treated (1)
  • importance of evaluating and treating all sexual partners
  • about safer sexual practices
  • importance of follow up - to assess the compliance of therapy (1)
