Endemic osteoarthritis

Some populations show an extremely high incidence of osteoarthritis.

Examples of endemic osteoarthritis include:

Kashin-Beck disease:

  • found in northern Russia and China
  • affects 8% of local population
  • caused by the destruction of cartilage following ingestion of the rye fungus, Fusarium sporotrichiella
  • joints affected include fingers, elbows, knees and ankles

Mseleni joint disease:

  • found in the Tsonga people of East Africa
  • commonly affects the hip joint amongst others
  • caused by congenital hip dysplasia syndromes
