The vertebral body is the most anterior, ovoid and dense part of the vertebra that has a key role in weight transmission down the spinal column. The term centrum is sometimes used synonymously with the vertebral body; they are different on the basis of development.

Relations:

  • superior & inferior: intervertebral disc spanning intervertebral joint
  • anterior: anterior longitudinal ligament
  • posterior: basivertebral veins, posterior longitudinal ligament and spinal canal
  • posterolateral: pedicle of vertebral arch
  • lateral: costal facet(s) in relevant vertebrae
  • posteroinferior: spinal nerve through intervertebral foramen
