Midpalmar space (infection)
Midpalmar space infections are rare and present with:
- palmar swelling with late fluctuance
- dorsal swelling due to lymphatic obstruction
- tenderness and erythema over the site
- pain on flexor tendon motion
Treatment entails:
- incision along the distal palmar flexion crease
- incision into space with culture of released pus
- irrigation of cavity
- insertion of drain
- repeated irrigation if the abscess is extensive
- delayed closure after 1-2 days
Systemic antibiotics are mandatory.
