Regional structure
The structure of the vertebrae shows a great deal of regional variation:
- the size of the vertebrae increases from cervical region inferiorly to lumbar region
- the vertebral foramina enlarge at the sites of increased innervation for limbs
- the size of the costal elements varies dramatically between regions
