The structure of the vertebrae shows a great deal of regional variation:

  • the size of the vertebrae increases from cervical region inferiorly to lumbar region
  • the vertebral foramina enlarge at the sites of increased innervation for limbs
  • the size of the costal elements varies dramatically between regions
