Short term effects include the following:
- neurologic - encephalopathy
- irritability and abnormal tone
- hypoglycaemia, hypocalcaemia, hyponatraemia - fits
- hypoventilation or hyperventilation, with acidosis
- intraventricular haemorrhage
- pulmonary
- haemorrhage
- respiratory distress syndrome
- aspiration
- renal
- tubular necrosis, with acute renal failure
- renal vein thrombosis
- syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion
- gastrointestinal
- perforation, ileus, necrotising enterocolitis
- hepatic - hepatitis
- reticuloendothelial - disseminated intravascular coagulation
