Research imaging
The various pathological processes in multiple sclerosis can be imaged using various MRI protocols:
- inflammation:
- gadolinium DTPA enhancing lesions on T1-weighted images are of recent origin and acutely inflamed
- demyelination:
- magnetisation transfer ratio
- astrocytosis:
- can be seen as areas of increased water content on T2-weighted images
- axonal damage:
- reduction in diffusion tensor imaging anisotrophy
- N-acetyl-aspartate spectroscopy
- focal atrophy
- T1-weighted black holes
