Incidence rate of HZV in the general population is 2–3/1000 person-years which increases to 7–10/1000 person-years after the age of 50 years (1).

Patients over the age of 50 years may suffer a significant decrease in quality of life due to HZV infection (2).

HZV associated mortality is generally low in the in the European countries but was shown to reach up to 19.5/100 000 in specific age groups (>95‐year olds) (1)
