Amino acids (gluconeogenesis)

The entry of amino acids into gluconeogenesis is dependent on enzymes specific to individual compounds. Amino acids which can be interconverted to glucose are described as gluconeogenic and include:

  • arginine
  • aspartate
  • glutamate
  • histidine
  • isoleucine
  • methionine
  • phenylalanine
  • proline
  • tyrosine
  • valine
  • threonine

Conversion occurs at time of stresses such as prolonged starvation.
