Regulation
As the majority of non-equilibrium reactions in glycolysis are unsaturated, the rate of flow through the pathway is dependent on provision of precursors by, for example:
- glycogenolysis in the liver
- glucose, fructose and galactose absorption from the gut
In tandem, a number of enzymes within the pathway are subject to regulation by agents both extrinsic and intrinsic to the cell:
- hexokinase
- 6-phosphofructokinase
- pyruvate kinase
