Mobilisation of sac

Authoring team

Having identified the femoral hernial sac through the groin incision, it must be mobilised. Frequently, a thick layer of multiple fasciae is overlying the sac. This is a combination of:

  • transversalis fascia
  • extraperitoneal fascia
  • cribriform fascia
  • femoral vein fascia

The sac is cleaned by blunt dissection on its surface. This is best carried out with a gauze swab.
