Criteria for measurement of BMR and RMR
BMR and RMR are standardly measured:
- ideally, sleeping
- fasted
- at normal body temperature
- in a thermally-stable state: no physiological change in basal metabolic rate due to adaptation to relatively cold or hot external temperature
Additionally, BMR requires measurement in the early hours of the morning when metabolism is minimal. This makes it a less practical index than RMR.
