Stomal ulcers complicate about 2% of gastrectomies for duodenal ulcer, but are extremely rare after resection for gastric ulcer.
They may be caused by inadequate removal of the acid secreting area of the stomach or rarely, due to the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
The ulcer may perforate, stenose, invade surrounding structures or bleed. It should be treated either by vagotomy or by a higher gastric resection.
