Antioxidant vitamins

Antioxidant vitamins are involved in the detoxification of oxygen radicals.

The important antioxidant vitamins are:

  • vitamin A
  • vitamin C
  • vitamin E

Antioxidant vitamin supplementation may have a role in:

  • prevention of atherosclerosis
  • prevention of cancer

Other substanced involved in protection from oxygen radical damage include:

  • urate
  • biliverdin
  • selenium

Notes:

  • a systematic review and meta-analysis found that antioxidant supplements for primary and secondary prevention did not decrease mortality
