Chronic osteomyelitis

Chronic osteomyelitis is prolonged inflammation of bone marrow, almost invariably due to infection.

This was once the almost inevitable outcome of acute haematogenous osteomyelitis; today, antibiotics will normally prevent this progression and now the most common causes of chronic osteomyelitis are open fractures and surgery.
