Hyperfiltration damage
Once a significant proportion of the nephrons have been destroyed renal function continues to deteriorate independent of the original pathology. Histology will demonstrate a characteristic picture of glomerulosclerosis.
Factors which accelerate the deterioration in renal function include:
- glomerular hyperperfusion and hyperfiltration
- a high protein diet
- hypertension
- hyperphosphataemia
