Partially treated meningitis is an important clinical entity to be aware of, particularly in an environment of liberal prescription of antibiotics, and increased general practitioner awareness of the need for the early community administration of parenteral antibiotics in serious meningitis.
Clinical features can include any of the features of meningitis. Most frequently the individual is unwell, has received antibiotics and has made a partial recovery. The cerebrospinal fluid findings should increase the suspicion.
