Radiosensitisers are compounds that potentiate the effect of ionising radiation. The most common example of this is Oxygen, such that well oxygenated tissues are damaged more than poorly oxygenated ones. The reason for this is that oxygen is able to fix the damage - especially through the creation of free radicals. This does not occur with alpha particles damage.
